Isabelle, age 42
Traveller's diarrhea
Hospitalization and transportation fees
Punta Cana, Dominican Republic.
During a week in Punta Cana, Isabelle consulted the hotel doctor for some red spots covering her body and accompanied by diarrhea. She expected to leave with some cream and antibiotics, but the hotel doctor had her taken to the emergency room by ambulance where, despite her protests, she was kept under observation. The spots were merely due to overexposure to the sun, but the traveller’s diarrhea had caused dehydration. The next day her husband also “visited” the hospital by ambulance suffering from the same problem… minus the red spots. Hospitalized for four days, they went home two days after their planned return, on a commercial flight at the insurer’s expense.
